Hey there! If you’re reading this, chances are you’re getting close to that big 6-5 milestone, or maybe you’re already there and feeling a bit overwhelmed by the mountain of mail arriving at your house in Stockton, Sacramento, or San Jose. First off, take a deep breath. You’ve worked hard, and you deserve healthcare that works just as hard for you.
I’m Gemma Sambi, and at Gemma Sambi Insurance Services, we make it our mission to turn the "Medicare maze" into a walk in the park. Medicare can feel like learning a whole new language, but it doesn't have to be. Today, I’m breaking down the basics of how to apply, what your options are for 2026, and how to get the most out of your coverage without spending a single penny on consultation fees.
What Exactly is Medicare? (The Quick Version)
Think of Medicare as your health safety net provided by the government. It’s primarily for folks 65 and older, but it also helps younger people with certain disabilities.
When you first start looking into this, you’ll hear about "Original Medicare." This is the foundation, and it’s made of two main parts:
- Part A (Hospital Insurance): This covers your "room and board" if you end up in the hospital, skilled nursing facility, or need hospice care. For most of us who have worked at least 10 years in the U.S., Part A is "premium-free", meaning you’ve already paid for it through your payroll taxes.
- Part B (Medical Insurance): This is for your doctor visits, outpatient care, lab tests, and medical equipment. Unlike Part A, Part B usually comes with a monthly premium.

When Should You Apply? Timing is Everything!
The biggest mistake I see seniors make is waiting too long and getting hit with a late enrollment penalty. Trust me, nobody wants to pay more for the same coverage!
The Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)
This is your "Golden Window." It lasts for seven months:
- 3 months before the month you turn 65.
- The month of your 65th birthday.
- 3 months after your birthday month.
If you’re already receiving Social Security benefits, the government usually enrolls you automatically. You’ll just wake up one day and find your "Red, White, and Blue" card in the mailbox about three months before you turn 65. If you aren't taking Social Security yet, you’ll need to sign up manually.
The General Enrollment Period (GEP)
Missed your initial window? Don’t panic, but be aware of the GEP. This happens every year from January 1 to March 31. While you can sign up then, your coverage won't start until the following month, and you might have to pay a lifelong penalty for Part B. You can learn more about avoiding Medicare penalties here.
Step-by-Step: How to Apply for Part A and Part B
Applying for Medicare in 2026 is easier than it used to be. You don't necessarily have to drive down to a busy Social Security office in downtown Sacramento or San Jose (though you can if you really want to!).
1. Online (The Fastest Way):
Head over to the Social Security website (ssa.gov). If you have a "my Social Security" account, the process takes about 10 to 15 minutes. It’s safe, secure, and you get a receipt immediately.
2. Over the Phone:
You can call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213. Just a heads-up: wait times can be a bit long, so have a cup of coffee ready!
3. In-Person:
If you prefer a face-to-face chat, you can visit your local Social Security office. I recommend making an appointment first so you aren't stuck in the waiting room all afternoon.

The Big Choice: Medicare Advantage vs. Medicare Supplement
Once you have Part A and Part B, you’ll notice that they don't cover everything. There are deductibles, co-pays, and no coverage for things like dental, vision, or gym memberships. This is where you have to make a choice.
Medicare Advantage (Part C)
Think of Medicare Advantage as an "All-in-One" plan. These are offered by private companies approved by Medicare. They take your Part A and Part B and bundle them together, usually adding prescription drug coverage (Part D) and extra perks like dental and vision.
In Central California, we have some fantastic options for 2026. At Gemma Sambi Insurance Services, we focus on carriers that treat our neighbors right. Our preferred list for 2026 includes:
- SCAN Health Plan
- Imperial Health Plan
- Astiva Health
- Alignment Health
These plans are popular because they often have $0 monthly premiums and low co-pays for doctor visits. You can see more details on how Medicare Advantage works here.
Medicare Supplement (Medigap)
If you want to go to any doctor in the country that accepts Medicare, a Supplement might be for you. These plans sit on top of your Original Medicare and "plug the holes." You’ll pay a monthly premium for the Supplement, but in return, you’ll have very little (if any) out-of-pocket costs when you go to the doctor.
Still confused? You aren't alone! Many people get these mixed up. I highly recommend reading this article on the difference between Medicare Supplement and Medicare Advantage.
A Special Mention: The PACE Program
For my friends in Stockton and San Jose who might need a little extra help to stay independent at home, I have to mention the PACE program (Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly).
PACE is a wonderful, all-inclusive option that covers medical, social, and long-term care services. The best part? You can often enroll in PACE year-round if you qualify, meaning you don't have to wait for a specific enrollment window. It’s a game-changer for seniors who want to avoid nursing homes and stay in the community they love.
